Jane Morse Bower (Ottawa, ON, Canada), and Jennifer Lee Morse (Durham, NC, USA) are collaborating to publish the travel diary of Jennie King Thurston Hincks, from the spring and summer of 1914. Jennie is Jane's great-grandmother and Jen's great-great-grandmother.
Jane has done 99.9% of the work by deciphering and transcribing Jennie's difficult handwriting. Jen is publishing the blog and finding relevant pictures online. We love the internets.
Thanks to Allison Dingle from Ottawa for helping to decipher and proof-read the diary.
We are excited to be bringing you this personal account of a lady's voyage to Italy from exactly 95 years ago.
Please feel free to comment and ask questions. Buon viaggio!

Wow! What a beautiful project you have both taken on. I will bookmark your blog so I can continue to read along.
Is this still able to be read?
Brenda Hincks in Maine
It should be able to be read. Let me know if you cannot. Are your related to Jennie Hincks?
sWhat a wonderful project. I came across this in my search for descendants of James and Eliza Duncan, for a book project that the Massillon Museum is undertaking. They were the founders of the city of Massillon, Ohio. We are trying to locate any of their living relatives, and I think that the child that Jennie is holding, William Duncan Morse, may be a connection, and that KDM would be a great-grandaughter. According to our research, Anson Morse, Katherine Duncan Morse, Margaret Morse Nice, and possibly Sarah and William were their greatgrandchildren. I'd appreciate any information you could provide to us on this. JoAnn Shade
THANK YOU for taking the time to transcribe and publish this diary!!! Florence, Jennie's sister, is my great-great grandmother. Her only daughter, Mary, was my grandpa Fred Metcalfe's mother. Our family has inherited many of Florence's heirlooms including photos, postcards, journals, etc. from their travels together. Are you on Ancestry.com? Would love to connect.
For more information about Jennie King Thurston Hincks, please contact me.
janiebower@gmail.com Jennie K.T. Hincks was my great grandmother.
Martha Metcalfe, I would love to hear from you.
Hello, Alfred and Percy were my father's cousins. Alfred's wife Emily was 'Aunt Emily' and always sent us a special 'Christmas treat' every year, which ended in 1970. I did not know until years later that she had died {I was just a kid].
They used to live in Berkeley when my dad was young. I would really enjoy being able to read/ have a copy of your info on Jennie. It took me years to find out about her husband. I knew about the family in Chicago, but never knew anything about more than 3 kids.
Thanks for this post which I came across by accident.
I have transcribed Jennie's diary and put lots of info about the family on the site. I see in some of the comments that some people would like to contact me. And I would certainly love to contact them. However, there is no way I can contact them or even know who they are from the info they leave on the the comment board. Please, my email is janiebower@gmail.com. I live in Ottawa, Ontario but grew up in Boston, MA. My great-grandmother through my father, William Duncan Morse, was Jennie. To the "Jennie Thurston Hincks relative", I know lots about Alfred and Percy and visit San Francisco very frequently. 2707 Regent St. does not exist anymore. I stress unless you email me or leave a contact on the message board, there is no way I can contact you, so please do email. Thanks. Jane Bower
I am doing research on Katherine Duncan Morse who spent some time in my home village in France during WW1 (cf The Uncensored Letters of A Canteen Girl)
I would welcome any information on her and I would like to know a bit more about the time he spent at Smith College and also what she did after the war. I am also looking for pictures of her or any other documents that might be interesting. Thank you for any kind of help provided.
